Basement Demolition Tips

Things to Do Before Smashing Through That Wall

You can save money by performing your own basement demolition, but you need to follow this checklist before you even pick up a sledgehammer and start swinging it.

Is It a Load Bearing Wall?

Load-bearing walls generally run perpendicular to the floor joists and are situated in the center of a home. Floor joists can be seen from the basement. Just bear in mind that a load-bearing wall that is on the first floor will usually extend to the top floor.

Exterior walls will always be load-bearing. If an addition is added, an exterior wall is not sometimes evident but still bears the weight of what is above it. Check with an engineer or contractor before you think of removing any possible load-bearing walls.

Scoring the Ceiling

You can keep the mess down by scoring the area between the wall you are removing and the ceiling. This prevents the drywall you are removing from taking down pieces of the ceiling.

Check for HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical

Walls that house the likes of HVAC vents, plumbing, or electrical outlets, should be removed carefully. Always check both sides of the wall. Turn off the main power when there is electricity running through the wall, and take care when removing any walls that house pre-existing plumbing. Put down your sledgehammer and use a saw to cut the drywall to reveal any pipes that may be lurking behind it. Switch off the water and speak to a plumber before you remove any pipes.

Cover Up

Put down either a drop cloth or cardboard on either side of the wall that you are removing, and if there is furniture present, make sure to cover it with sheets or plastic. Wood and drywall particles do get everywhere so be prepared for that. If the property was built before 1978, make sure it is tested for asbestos before removing anything. Asbestos insulation must be taken out by a professional.
